Pansies are a cool weather plant that you can plant in the fall or early spring and usually die in the summer months. The cool thing about growing pansies is that they can be planted as annuals, biennials or perennials, depending on the species. They have incredible color variations and the recognizable face on the petal.Growing pansies can be a confusing topic, especially for those not familiar with their hardiness. What many homeowners do not know is that you can plant pansies in the fall and they are hardy enough to last through the winter months and produce beautiful flowers in the spring. Pansies usually bloom rich, robust flowers in the spring when they have been in the ground all winter. So, not only do you get to enjoy the fall colors, but you can enjoy the pansies 6 months later in the spring. However, the earlier you plant in the fall, the stronger the pansy will be as winter comes. In the more northern, colder regions of the country you will want to plant them in early September. As you move down into the warmer regions, you can get away with planting in mid-October.

When growing pansies, make sure you have an area with good drainage. When the snow and ice begin to melt in the early spring, make sure your pansies do not get over saturated with water. As you shop for pansies, resist the temptation to buy larger, overgrown pansies in the pack. These normally will exhibit some yellow on the leaves and will never do as well when planted. You want to look for the smaller younger pansies in the packs. Though they will be smaller and not show many blooms, you will be rewarded later as they tend to grow into a much stronger and more vibrant colored plant.Pansies do not tolerate the heat very well, so make sure to plant them in at least partial sun. They need to be planted 6 to 8 inches apart in an area that has good soil and regular moisture.When growing pansies, you will want to apply a mild fertilizer at the time of fall planting and then around 4 to 5 weeks beginning with the onset of spring. These plants are pretty pest resistant, however, aphids will occasionally crop up, and slugs and snails tend to make pansies their home. Growing pansies in your yard is relatively easy and adds an array of color for both the fall and spring seasons.
